Our Favourite Activities in and around in Jasper

It would be easy to enjoy a couple of weeks holiday in Jasper but we realise that it’s more likely you’ll be there for a couple of days, so we’ve compiled this list our favourite activities in and around Jasper.

Spirit Island Cruise on Maligne Lake

Our most popular activity in Jasper is undoubtably a cruise on Maligne Lake. The lakes throughout the Rockies are beautiful, but Maligne Lake has a very special beauty. Fed by glaciers, the crystal waters reflect the surrounding mountains and forests with particular clarity. You’ll learn all about the lake from the entertaining commentary on the cruise boat, and the highlight is the sighting of Spirit Island. Walking on the island is prohibited, so it remains perfect and pristine to be enjoyed from several viewpoints. The island is a spiritual place for the Stoney Nakoda First Nation, who believe mountains are physical representations of their ancestors. The fact that Spirit Island is surrounded on three sides by the same mountain range is a very rare occurrence and makes it particularly significant to the Stoney.

Jasper Downtown Foodie Tour

We love this short walk (about a mile) which takes in four restaurants and myriad of tastes, over the course of three hours. You’ll be enjoying handpicked dishes each paired with an alcoholic beverage, with the bonus of learning all about Jasper’s history and local tales as you tuck into some delicious food and drink.

Jasper Planetarium

Billed as the worlds largest accessible dark sky preserve, it’s worth staying up a little later than usual to view the skies like you’ve never seen them before. We recommend you book the Telescope and Planetarium Combo ticket, so you enjoy the 40 minute show in the domed theatre first, then you get to look through the most powerful telescopes in the Rockies, all the time enjoying the informative and fun expertise of their guides. It can get chilly out there though, so make sure you wrap up warm.

Jasper Skytram

Take a trip up the highest and longest guided aerial tramway in Canada It’s a gentle seven to eight minute ride up to 2,263 metres. Once you’re at the top you can simply enjoy the spectacular views enjoying some refreshments at the Summit Café, or stroll the boardwalk to read the info boards. Or you can walk the trail to the summit of Whistlers Mountain where you’ll have panoramic views of six mountain ranges – its just under a mile each way.

Jasper Wildlife Discovery Tour

We’d thoroughly recommend this tour with personable and knowledgeable guides who are trained to see out Jasper’s most iconic creatures – great and small! Jasper’s wild animals include elk, deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, foxes, coyotes, bears, wolves and moose. You’ll learn all about the ways these animals contribute to the rich diversity of the National Park, along with the history, geology and ecology of the area. Have your camera ready to capture some amazing photos of the beautiful scenery and the animals in their natural habitat.

Sidecar Motorcycle Tour of Jasper

Enjoy a personalised sightseeing tour of Jasper and it’s surrounds on a Harley Davidson touring motorcycle! Either riding in the side-car or pillion, you’ll be driven by a professional rider and guide around beautiful lakes, viewpoints and historical sites. A tour like no other, you can feel the wind in your hair and see all the beautiful sights from a unique position.

The Columbia Icefield

If you’re travelling between Jasper and Banff on the Icefields Parkway, then a visit to the Columbia Icefield is a must. Located in Jasper National Park, just an hour drive south of the town, you can either visit under your own steam arriving by car or on an excursion including transportation. Either way you’ll start at the Glacier Discover Centre to learn more about the icefield and pick up a bus to take you to the glacier itself. Here you will board a purpose-built Ice Explorer which can deal with the off-road terrain and steep moraine slope – then you’ll have time to walk on and drink from the glacier – a 10,000 year old sheet of ice! Then it’s onto the glass-floored Skywalk, extending 30 meters out over the Sunwapta Canyon, for an awe-inspiring walk.

We can book all of these experiences for you to make sure you get the most out of your time in Jasper. Have a chat with our travel consultants for details of the different options and costs.
