Enjoy thrilling outdoor activities and unique wildlife encounters

Cariboo Chilcotin Coast is the perfect destination for the adventurous, for those who prefer to hike along soaring mountains and enjoy the quietness of the wild rather than wander through lively city streets and shop till they drop.

This dazzling destination is split into three distinct areas. The first is Cariboo, a natural paradise that has changed very little from the days of the Gold Rush Trail in the 1850s. The towering hills and the banks of unbelievably turquoise lakes are adorned with traditional ranches and rustic pioneer cabins rich in First Nations culture, whilst the Cariboo Mountains that sit across the east create the perfect trail for mountain biking, hiking and snowshoeing.

Next is Chilcotin, an area brimming with frontier spirit yet still offering that enviable feeling of being the only people for miles. There are only a few inhabited Aboriginal villages, instead the whole place feels as if it’s British Columbia’s backcountry, an empty canvas where you can fish, white water raft, and ride up the mountains on horseback to your heart’s content. Test your nerves by charging down the winding Chilcotin River, known to be one of the most challenging white-water rafting rivers in North America, or venture through the wilderness in search of unique wildlife, including rare white pelicans, lynx, wolves and mountain caribou.

Lastly is the Coast, which needs to be seen to be believed. Impossibly crystal-clear fjords are bejewelled with emerald green islands, whilst the rolling mountains are shrouded in thick cedar forest. This is a place of solitude and seclusion, where you can be left with your thoughts as you kayak, hike, and relax in the natural hot springs. Home to the Great Bear Rainforest, this is your best chance to see the elusive Spirit Bear, a rare subspecies of the American black bear, as well as other lesser seen animals including marine wolves, eagles and killer whales.
