We usually opt for an adventure-fuelled holiday, but wanted to add even more excitement when it came to our honeymoon. After hearing our friends rave about Canada, we were desperate to go and explore, and decided that the West would be the perfect backdrop to our first holiday as a married couple. We spent two weeks journeying through some wonderful destinations, including Vancouver, Jasper, Banff and Whistler.
A highlight of ours was whale watching on Vancouver Island. It was the most magical experience – there were so many humpback whales, and one breached close by to our boat! Even our tour guide was amazed - seeing them breach is a rare sight, so we felt very lucky. We lucked out with the weather in Vancouver too, it was so lovely and sunny whilst we mooched around the shops, cycled through Stanley Park, and checked out the views on a float plane.
We had some amazing adventures elsewhere, too – though with much colder weather! Whilst in Whistler we went mountain biking which was really cool, and the gondola in Banff is definitely a must-see – we went to the top of Sulphur Mountain and the recently settled snow looked incredible. Our favourite lodge stay was in Banff too… Buffalo Mountain Lodge had such a cosy and welcoming vibe, and we especially loved having our own wood fireplace to come back to after a cold day of exploring.
Despite the crazy snow, we still got to see Lake Louise. It’s just as beautiful as it looks in the photos! There’s a couple of unique experiences that we’d recommend too, including seeing a hockey game in Calgary, and gazing at the amazing light installations at Vallea Lumia in Whistler. We had some delicious food during our trip, including awesome seafood at Syrah’s in Jasper, and Vancouver’s Fisherman’s Wharf is brimming with cool eateries.
We’d recommend British Columbia to anyone hoping for an amazing adventure they won’t forget. The drives are long, but they’re worth it – there’s incredible views around every corner.
