Soak up the rich culture and history of Halifax

Halifax is a town filled with fascinating maritime history and charm, gracing you with a laidback ambience, picturesque harbours, sparkling waterfronts and the majestic star-shaped fort Citadel overlooking the town’s charming streets.

This is a city that is soaked in history and culture. Spot the hilltop Citadel, a magnificent star-shaped fort that was built in the 1850’s, before wandering around the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and stopping by the famous Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21. The latter is a truly fascinating National Historic Site, which was once the first point of entry for immigrants between 1928 and 1971.

Another big part of the Halifax lifestyle is enjoying a beer or two. As you’re visiting the city with more pubs per capita than almost every other city in Canada, it’ll be silly not to try at least one. The most popular and well-known brewer is Alexander Keith, who founded the Alexander Keith’s Nova Scotia Brewery back in 1820. Now, the historic brewery offers interesting tours ending with a great ale.

Days in the metropolis are laidback, with most people spending their days fishing, perusing shops, dining al fresco and relaxing along the waterfront. In the summer, you’ll find lots of pop-up ‘patios’ springing up along the coast, offering picturesque outdoor areas to enjoy a drink, or you could walk along Argyle Street and hop between the bars there. Nature enthusiasts will surely love the Halifax Public Gardens, which is abundant in bright, colourful flowers and luscious plants, or you could venture to the 200-year old restored fishing village at Fisherman’s Cove.
